Gabrielle Shelton is a rare combination of a craftsperson and artist. She first trained as a sculptor in LA and then went on to move to Williamsburg, where she continued to produce art while working in construction and welding shops.
Today, Shelton Studios, based in Greenpoint, offers all manner of services – fabrication, machining, casting, finishing – in metal ranging from steel, copper, brass, bronze, aluminium, zinc, iron and stainless steel. Some of her favourite projects include a bronze handle cast from a piece of driftwood and several thin, 12-foot-tall sculptural outdoor chairs that look custom-crafted for a Giacometti figure.
From talking to her for only an hour I got a sense of her extensive technical knowledge but also her incredible passion for metal fabrication. She’s capable of creating just about anything you can imagine.
An important thing to note is Gabrielle has started to walk away from very large scale projects. She is incredibly connected with the metal/glass/stone fabrication world and welcomes our studio to send anything her way and will vet out to the appropriate supplier in her network if she believes they will do a better job. Her speciality is feature metal pieces, sculptural, minimalist staircases, hand patinas, and framed walls.
Gabrielle provided me a list of past clients such as artist, Richard Serra, galleriest David Zwirner and a handful of designers and architects, but to speak to her knowledge and talent was a note that a past design firm gifted her that read:
“When I work with you, I imagine that this must have been the relationship architects and designers in the nineteen-fifties and -sixties had with their tradespeople. Not only are you a master of your craft, but you care so much about the design, and there is so much pride in your work. Interested in the execution, of course, but also the exchange in ideas. A true artist.”
A very special supplier that can be used to elevate our future and ongoing projects.
